The Toy That Gets Hugged, Not Just Played With
There is a difference between a toy a child plays with and a toy a child sleeps with, and it is not a small one.
A board game comes out on a rainy afternoon and goes back in the cupboard. A soft toy goes everywhere. It gets carried to the dinner table, argued with, apologized to, dragged across a floor by one ear, and eventually washed by a mother who has been told very firmly not to. It is the object a small child uses to practice caring about something.
This is why soft toys sit in their own collection rather than among the games. The child is not being given something to do. He is being given something to look after.
Teddy Bears, Dolls and Plush Animals
The collection covers four things, and the difference between them matters more than the price does.
Teddy bears. The default, and the default for good reason. A teddy bear needs no explanation to a child of any age, in any country, and it is the one soft toy that is still on a shelf twenty years later.
Plush animals. Dogs with furry coats, dogs in tiger-print fur, and other animals. Choose these over a bear when the child already has three bears, or when the family has a dog and the resemblance will be noticed and enjoyed.
Dolls. Sitting dolls in fabric dresses, with long hair that a child will spend an hour brushing. These are for the age at which a toy stops being an object and starts being a person.
Doll houses and soft toy keychains. At either end of the range. A doll house is a gift that occupies a table and a weekend. A soft toy keychain is a small thing to clip to a school bag, and it is what to send when you are sending to four children at once.
Choosing for a Child You Have Not Seen in Two Years
Photographs lie about size. A child who was a toddler when you left is now at school, and the toy you remember him wanting is the toy he has grown out of.
The safe rule is that soft toys age downward, not upward. A six-year-old will accept a toy meant for a four-year-old and quietly keep it. A four-year-old handed something meant for a six-year-old will find it uninteresting. When you are unsure, send simpler.
Keychains solve the older-child problem entirely. A boy of ten who would be embarrassed by a teddy bear will clip a small plush animal to his bag without a second thought, because it reads as an accessory rather than a toy.
What It Costs to Send a Soft Toy Abroad
Soft toys are light and enormous, and couriers have opinions about this.
International shipping is charged on whichever is greater: the actual weight of the parcel, or its volumetric weight, calculated from its dimensions. A large plush toy weighs almost nothing and fills half a box, so it is nearly always the volume that is charged. This is why a soft toy can cost more to ship than a boxed doll house that weighs three times as much.
Two practical consequences. First, size up only if you mean it — the jump from a small plush animal to a large one costs more in freight than it does in the toy. Second, if you are sending to several children, several small toys in one consignment will usually cost less than one large toy, and will certainly cause fewer arguments.
Soft Toys, or Toys and Games?
Send a soft toy when the child is small, when the gift is meant to be kept rather than used up, or when you want something in the house that will still be there when he is grown.
Send Toys and Games when the child is older, when he wants to do something rather than have something, or when there are two children who need to play against each other.
