The Gift That Goes to School on Monday
Ask a nine-year-old what he did with the present his aunt sent from Canada and he will tell you he took it to school.
This is the quiet advantage of stationery and learning sets over almost every other gift. A unicorn notebook, a set of novelty erasers, a color box with forty-six pieces — these are not toys that sit in a bedroom. They go into a bag, come out at a desk, and get shown to a table of other children who ask where they came from. The gift is used in public, repeatedly, for months.
A soft toy is loved privately. A pencil case is a small daily announcement that somebody far away was thinking about him.
Stationery, Learning Sets and Motorized Toys

Motorized and light-up toys. Remote control racing cars, LED cars that rotate through three hundred and sixty degrees, and a dancing dog that plays music and flashes as it moves. These are the gifts that produce the first reaction — the noise a child makes when the box opens.
Motorized toys ship without batteries. Air freight rules restrict what we can send, so buy the cells locally and have them ready before the box is opened. It is a small thing, and it is better to know now than on the morning of the festival.
Nothing in this collection is licensed merchandise, which is deliberate. A branded toy dates the moment a child moves on from the show. A color box does not.
Sending to Several Children at Once

Why a Gift That Gets Used Up Is Not a Lesser Gift
There is a habit in gift-giving of valuing permanence. The toy that survives childhood, the thing still on a shelf twenty years later.
A color box does not survive. It is used until the crayons are stubs, and then it is thrown away. So is the notebook, once every page is full. By that standard these are poor gifts, and by any standard a child actually applies, they are among the best. The crayons were used because he wanted to use them. The notebook filled up because he had something to put in it.
What survives is not the object. It is the drawing that ended up on a wall, and the fact that when a teacher asked whose colors those were, a child said his sister sent them from India.
