The Rakhi He Will Wear to School
Raksha Bandhan usually falls on a school day, or near enough that the rakhi is still on a wrist when Monday comes.
This is the whole calculation. A boy who has been given something with a working pen on it, or a band that lights when pressed, walks into a classroom carrying a conversation. A boy given a plain thread walks in with a plain thread. Both are equally auspicious. Only one gets asked about.

This is the single most common mistake a sister makes ordering from abroad. Children abandon characters faster than adults abandon anything, and a rakhi carrying last year's favourite lands with a politeness that tells you everything. Worse, tastes now diverge by country: a nephew in Houston and a nephew in Jaipur are frequently watching entirely different things.
The safe ground is objects, not characters. A pen rakhi, an aeroplane, a fish, a band that lights up — these depend on nothing except being seven. If you are certain about the character, buy the character. If you are guessing, buy the object, and you will be right.
What He Takes On When the Thread Goes On
Nobody explains it to him, which is the interesting part.
The rakhi is not a decoration and it is not a present. It is a contract, tied by a sister onto the wrist of someone who has done nothing yet to deserve it, in advance of a lifetime in which he is expected to. She prays for him. He owes her protection. He is six years old and cannot protect a sandwich.
He learns what it meant later, and generally through repetition rather than instruction. Every August somebody ties a thread on him. Every August somebody tells him it is because she is his sister. By the time he is old enough to understand what he has been agreeing to since he was three, he has agreed to it fourteen times, and it has become the sort of thing he would find it strange not to do.
This is why the rakhi you send a small boy matters more than the gift you send with it. The gift is forgotten by October. The thread is a habit being formed.
