When a Sister Ties a Rakhi to a Sister
The custom is older and more established than most people assume, and it did not begin as a modern gesture.
In Marwari and Rajasthani families a woman tying a rakhi on another woman is ordinary practice, not an innovation. Where a family has two daughters and no son, the sisters tie on each other, and the thread carries the same promise it always did: that each will look after the other for as long as they both live. The same logic produced the lumba, tied by a sister on her brothers wife, because a household is protected by the women in it and not only by the men.

Designs a Girl Will Actually Keep On
A rakhi has roughly four minutes to justify itself before a small hand starts pulling at it.
Teddy and animal rakhis. A movable teddy set into a heart, a cat with a face. These are held and turned over rather than worn passively, which is exactly why they stay on.
Emoji and heart rakhis. The visual language a seven-year-old already reads fluently. An emoji rakhi needs no explanation and gets recognised across a classroom.
Rakhis that are also objects. A keychain that clips to a school bag. A rakhi with a small working pen attached. A band that lights up. These outlive the festival by weeks, because the child keeps them for what they do rather than what they mean.
Cushion rakhis. Soft, with nothing rigid against the skin. The right choice for the very young.
Choosing for a Baby or a Toddler
A baby girl cannot tell you the band is scratching her.
For infants and children under three, choose soft over clever. A cushion rakhi or a plain teddy rakhi has nothing hard pressing into a small wrist, no beads to work loose, and nothing that will be interesting enough to chew. Save the pen rakhis and light-up bands for the age at which a child can be told to leave something alone and will occasionally listen.
From about four upward the rule inverts. Whatever does something — opens, lights, writes, clips — will be worn longest, because it stops being jewellery and starts being a possession.
